PixMix Amazing Photos 10

Centralization!

How often have you found yourself asking friends left and right for the pictures they promised to send you? Of course, during a party everybody thinks they'll be ready and apt to send their photos to your e-mail address as soon they'll get home. Right! That rarely happens, and is generally less likely to happen the more their brains get bathed in alcohol vapors. Besides that, laziness usually takes its toll and convinces your friends that what they're doing at that moment is way more important than posting some pictures they took a couple of days ago.

If you have Super Cool Friends then lucky you! Go outside and enjoy the weather. On the other hand if you struggle to create a congruent photo album every time you go out, read on. PixMix (not to be confused with PicMix) has finally arrived and will employ discipline into every lazy party goer with a smart phone.

Shared uploading

PixMix is a photo sharing application that manages online photo albums in real time. The main idea is as follows: You take some pictures and then create an album in PixMix. This will upload the album to a web address. You will then share the link with everybody who wants to contribute. While they have access to the album, every picture they will be taking will also be uploaded (provided they also have PixMix installed). The result will be a constant photo synchronization. This will lift the pressure from control freaks who bug people for days on end to send them the pictures they took last Friday night. Now that this has been taken care of, let's see how this app actually fares.

When you first launch PixMix you will be asked if you're going to be using it primarily to create album or collages. Tough choice, you think, wondering what this perplexing question wants from you. If your screen turns off while you're still pondering, the question will disappear and you'll be free of the burden. Rejoice!

The main screen displays all of the albums you've created. It is initially empty and only has two small buttons, +Collage and +Album. Collage is an interesting function that is supposed to help you organize pictures into attractive dashboard stile collages. Unfortunately it is very underdeveloped and is largely non functional. The main deal is with the +Album button.

Creating a new album is made fairly easy in the +Album screen. All of the pictures will be sorted into groups based on their relative creation time. For example, photos you have taken in the last thirty minutes will most likely appear as a suggestion for an album. You can navigate between suggestions and select pictures individually if you want or just tap on select all if you agree with PixMix. Selected pictures will be compiled to a new album which can be then shared with others.

Features

  • Create private photo albums on your phone
  • Set any picture as wallpaper
  • Share photo albums with selected people
  • Each participant can share their photos to the same album
  • Albums are also available offline to every participant
  • Albums can also be viewed on a computer as a web gallery

The sharing functionality is great if you want to quickly share pictures from your phone with more people. As they are constantly synced between participants, you can set up interesting scenarios where somebody can view sort of a live stream of pictures from an event that is in full swing.

Pros

  • Consolidation of photos from events is done automatically
  • Sorting pictures by relative date and time is brilliantly useful

Cons

  • Collages cannot be saved and editing does not work correctly
  • Slow sync speed. PixMix does not see pictures being taken quickly enough and is generally a bit slow
  • You cannot take pictures from inside PixMix (although the official screenshots suggest otherwise)

Conclusion

PixMix has great potential of becoming wildly used. Unfortunately it is plagued by buggy or missing functions and is generally not polished enough for a Gold release. The interface, performance and synchronization times should be improved also. With all that being said, I think PixMix is on the right track, being innovative enough to attract attention and find recognition in the huge sea of apps.
